The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
