Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
