Can You Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped the Contemporary World
One can find numerous contenders for the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be produced within a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, which converted timber into boards using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could build ships more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part converted the circular motion to up-and-down motion for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning movement into a lateral movement feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Every component seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them in order that they acted in a precisely synchronized order, sawing on every downward motion while advancing with each return motion. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent application of basic parts.”
A fact that brings us up to today’s challenge. I’d like you to reinvent one of the fundamental concepts behind this historic machine.
Round and Up
Construct a mechanism which converts circular motion to up-and-down action. You have these components exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, which is a cylinder or housing through which one of the rods will fit snugly. (Assume you can mount components on a base, so the parts don’t fall down.)
The solution returns at 5pm UK time featuring the solution.
In the interim, PLEASE NO HINTS. Rather, please suggest (less celebrated) contenders as the planet’s most impactful creation.
